Weighing on a running conveyor belt

MULTIBELT belt scales provide continuous bulk solids measurement in belt conveyor systems for reliable throughput (t/h) and totalizing (t). The scales are designed for demanding industrial environments and support flow rates up to 20,000 t/h with accuracy up to ±0.25% to weigh bulk materials reliably for downstream processing.

Typical applications

MULTIBELT conveyor belt scales are used for continuous acquisition of flow rates and total quantities. They are particularly useful in applications where robust, repeatable measurements are required in continuously operating belt conveyor systems. To accurately determine material flows, measurement values from load cells are integrated into the process control system via appropriate interfaces. For this purpose, each load cell provides a measurement signal; additional process information can be added as needed.

Common tasks include:

  • Throughput and consumption measurement in production plants.
  • Accountability of stored and retrieved amounts (inventory/reconciliation).
  • Load limit alarm.
  • Batching in load‑out stations.
  • Legal‑for‑trade weighing (where required).
  • Prefeeder control.

How do belt scales work?

A conveyor belt scale determines the weight of the material on a specific section of a conveyor belt using load cells. The sensors are located in the weighing station and measure the force resulting from the belt load converting it into an electrical signal. When required combining it with belt speed measurement to calculate mass flow. For speed measurement, various speed transducers (e.g., friction wheel tachometers) are available as options. Regular calibration of the load cell, weighers, and evaluation unit is recommended to ensure stable measurement quality.

Industry use cases

Conveyor belt scales are used in a wide range of industries – anywhere where bulk materials need to be continuously measured or multiple conveyor belts run in parallel.

Common applications include:

  • Cement & Building Materials:
Monitor raw meal, clinker, gypsum and additives to improve material balance, stabilize production and enable reliable shift reporting
  • Steel & Metals:
Track sinter, pellets, coke, fluxes and alloying materials to increase transparency across lines and support consistent furnace charging
  • Alternative Fuels:
Measure alternative fuel streams on conveyors to support coprocessing targets, document consumption and reduce deviations
  • Power & Energy:
Control fuel rates for consumption tracking, efficiency optimization and operational reporting in continuously running conveying systems
  • Mining
Continuous throughput and totalizing on conveyors for production reporting, load-out control, and stockpile reconciliation in demanding, abrasive environments.
  • Manufacturing (glass & paper)
Reliable conveyor weighing for raw material and additive handling to stabilize feed rates, improve material balance, and support consistent production quality.
